We camped near Morro Rock
A volcano cone, one of
Nine Sisters
Sacred and protected
Only members of the
Salinan and Chumash
Allowed to climb.
Outsiders, we watched
The way the night tide
Reached up and
Engulfed the drizzling sky
And all we heard
Was the swishing foam
Swallowing sand
And all we saw
Were hermit crabs dancing
But we knew the hawk and raven
Had destroyed the two-headed
Serpent monster Taliyekatapelta
And it was safe to sleep.
